Sopelana beach in Bilbao

Beaches of Sopelana – Bilbao: Barinatxe beach – La Salvaje

Barinatxe beach, also known as “Wild Beach”, is located in Larrabasterra, between the municipalities of Sopelana and Getxo. It is 752 meters in length and has an area of 198,000 m² at low tide and 61,500 m² at high tide. Barinatxe beach in Sopelana is listed as one of the best beaches in Biscay. Barinatxe is also one of the favorite destinations for naturalists, since on its peripheries nudism can be practiced. The traditional Sopelana Nudist Race – Patxi Ros Trophy – takes place at this beach every year.

Beaches of Sopelana – Bilbao: Arrietara y Atxabiribil

Atxabiribil and Arrietara beaches are located east of Barinatxe beach and are the third longest beaches in Biscay after Bakio and La Arena. Although it seems that both beaches are only one, they are two different beaches sharing the same sand. Arrietara is to the west and Atxabiribil is next to the Peñon and has golden sand. Beaches of Sopelana – Bilbao: Meñakoz

Meñakoz beach is in Barrika. It is the shortest beach of the 3 three, at only 400 meters in length and, like Barinatxe, is a nudist beach. It is surrounded by cliffs and has rock instead of sand, so it is usually more frequented by surfers.

Among the services at the beaches of Sopelana Barinatxe – Arrietara – Atxabiribil are: public toilets, changing rooms, fountains and showers, lifeguards in the summer months, wastebaskets, children’s playground next to the parking lot and bicycle storage. In the immediate vicinity of Barinatxe beach you can eat at the Indian Pub Sopelana. On Arrietara beach you will also find several bars and restaurants. From November to April dogs are allowed.

How to get around & parking

Barinatxe beach has a toll parking. Sometimes this parking is restricted for motorhomes. To get to Meñakoz it is necessary to go by car or walk from the subway station. It can be reached by car but it is best to go by metro from Bilbao to Larrabasterra station and then take the shuttle, a free bus to the beaches.
